Everything was surreal in that first hour after Grant was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the go-to hospital of Hollywoodâs elite.
When heâd first been hit, Piper had shot up out of her chair as if sheâd been ejected and run toward him.
Paul, the guy whoâd accidentally done the hitting, knelt over Grant, his hands hovering as if he wanted to touch Grant but didnât know if he should, an expression of horror on his face.
Piper basically did the same when she reached Grant: she knelt and wanted to touch him but was afraid that might somehow make things worse.
âHe was just there all of a sudden,â said Paul, distraught and looking as if he were near tears. âI didnât have time to pull back.â He shook his head. âIâm so sorry. Iâm so, so sorry.â
âGrant?â she said, trying to keep calm. âGrant, can you hear me?â
As she was saying this, the set doctor, who had been on standby, reached them.
Grant didnât respond to Piperâs questions. He was out cold. He had fallen face-forward onto his stomach, and his head was turned to one side, his dark, straight lashes resting on the cheek that was visible, his mouth slightly slack. Blood seeped steadily from a wound on the crown of his head, matting his dark hair.
The sight of it made Piper woozy, but she reminded herself that head wounds always bled a lot, that they sometimes looked worse than they actually were. She hoped that was the case now, although the fact that he was unconscious put her on the verge of panic.
Both of his arms were sprawled out beside him, and it didnât look as if heâd even tried to break his fall. It was like his lights went out before heâd even hit the ground.
The doctor, an older guy with short white hair and metal-framed glasses, said, âStand back, please.â He had a medic bag with him and quickly put on some blue disposable gloves, then pulled out some gauze and pressed it to Grantâs head to stanch the wound.
Piper and the others surrounding Grant, including Ezra, did as he asked and cleared the space around Grant, but Piper could still see everything that was going on. She felt someone come up next to her and put his arm around her. It was Grantâs assistant, Derek. She hugged him, his tall, wiry body a comforting shelter as they all waited and watched the doctor examine Grant.
To her weak-kneed relief, Grant began to respond to the doctorâs attempts to wake him. He groaned, and his eyes flickered open.
âGrant,â said the doctor, âcan you hear me?â
He grimaced, then closed his eyes.
âGrant? Do you know where you are?â
âCourse I do,â he said groggily. He pushed up onto his arms a little, then grimaced again and mumbled, âFuck.â
âEasy,â said the doctor.
Swallowing hard, Grant lay back down again on his stomach.
âGrant, do you know where you are?â
After a second he answered, âBattle set.â
âGood.â
This time, instead of trying to sit, Grant rolled slowly onto his back, blinking his eyes several times.
